glass beaker is a common piece of laboratory glassware, typically a cylindrical container with a flat bottom and an open top, used for holding, mixing, and heating liquids. They are made of glass, often borosilicate glass, due to its resistance to thermal shock and chemical reactions. Beakers are distinguished from flasks by their straight sides, unlike the sloping sides of flasks.
Here's a more detailed look:
Shape and Function:
Beakers are cylindrical with a flat bottom, allowing them to stand stably on a lab bench. They have a spout for easy pouring.
Material:
While commonly made of glass (particularly borosilicate glass for its properties), beakers can also be made of plastic or metal.
Common Uses:
Beakers are versatile lab tools used for:
Holding liquids
Mixing and stirring solutions
Heating substances (especially with borosilicate glass)
Monitoring chemical reactions
Storing samples
Size Variation:
Beakers come in a wide range of sizes, from small (a few milliliters) to large (several liters), depending on the specific application.
Distinction from Flasks:
While both are used in labs, beakers have straight sides, while flasks (like Erlenmeyer flasks) have sloping sides. This difference impacts their suitability for different tasks, such as swirling or sealing a container.

Glass vacuum fraction cutter/Perkin Triangle
| Size | 12 inch |
| Country of Origin | Made in India |
- Vacuum Distillation: It facilitates vacuum distillation by allowing fractions to be isolated and collected without breaking the vacuum in the main distillation apparatus.
- Air Sensitivity: It's ideal for distilling materials that are sensitive to air or oxygen.
- Fraction Collection: The apparatus utilizes a series of glass or Teflon taps to isolate collected fractions, enabling multiple fractions to be collected sequentially.
- Reflux Maintenance: The design allows reflux to continue uninterrupted while fractions are being collected, helping to maintain a consistent distillation process.
- Drying Solvents: The Perkin triangle can also be used for drying solvents by refluxing them over a drying agent.
- Still pot: Contains the mixture to be distilled.
- Fractionating column: Ideally vacuum-jacketed, for separating the components.
- Thermometer: To monitor the boiling point temperature.
- Teflon taps: A series of taps (Teflon or glass) control the flow and isolation of fractions.
- Cold finger: A condenser for the distillate.
- Cooling water system: To circulate coolant through the condenser.
- Vacuum/gas inlet: For applying vacuum or introducing an inert gas like nitrogen or argon.
- Still receiver: Collection flask for the distillate.
- Stirrer bar/anti-bumping granules: To prevent bumping during heating.
- Reduced Risk of Decomposition: The ability to distill under reduced pressure lowers the boiling point, minimizing the risk of decomposition of heat-sensitive compounds.
- Improved Separation: Vacuum distillation can provide better separation for compounds with close boiling points compared to distillation at atmospheric pressure.
- Gentle Extraction: The technique facilitates gentler extraction for sensitive compounds.
- Sequential Fraction Collection: It allows the collection of multiple fractions without interrupting the distillation process or exposing the distillate to air.
- Ventilation: Ensure the distillation area is well-ventilated to prevent vapor buildup.
- Ignition Sources: Avoid open flames and other ignition sources near the apparatus, as many chemicals are flammable.
- Pressure Management: Monitor and control pressure and temperature carefully to prevent overpressure and potential hazards.
- Bumping: Use methods like even heating or stirring to prevent bumping (sudden boiling), especially during reduced-pressure distillation.
- Inert Atmosphere: Operate under an inert atmosphere (nitrogen or argon) for air-sensitive materials.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE like gloves, safety goggles, and a lab coat.
- Never boil to dryness: Avoid boiling organic compounds to dryness, especially if they might contain peroxides, which could lead to an explosion.

Filtration is a process that helps to separate the three states of matter namely Solids, Liquids, and Gases. Filtration can be done biologically or chemically in the laboratories. This process involves a filter medium, like a filter paper which helps to easily trap the solid particles and separate them from liquids.
Filtration Methods
- General Filtration - This is the most basic form of filtration in which the liquid is poured through a filter medium. This method works on gravity, hence the liquid flows down the funnel and the solid is left on the filter.
- Hot Filtration - In this method of filtration, the solution, filter, and funnel are heated up till the crystals are formed during filtration. It is used to prevent the crystallization of other components in a mixture.
- Cold Filtration - This method of filtration is used to quickly cool down a solution and form small crystals. It is usually done when the solid is dissolved in the liquid.
- Vacuum Filtration - In this method of filtration, a funnel and a hose are used which help to suck the fluid through the filter by creating a vacuum. This speeds up the separation and the solid gets dried.
Vacuum Filtration Apparatus
The Vacuum Filtration Apparatus is used to easily filter out the solid, liquid, and gases from the solution with the help of a vacuum pump. The apparatus is made up of fine quality Borosilicate Glass and has a Clamp to hold the funnel.
The apparatus consists of a glass that supports the filter disc and a funnel that sits on top of the base. The entire assembly fits on a filter flask with the help of a rubber stopper. The filter flask serves as a safety barrier to minimize the chance that liquid will be drawn into the vacuum source.
